How We Research
Every guide here starts with one question: will this doorbell suit the person who is shopping for it? That depends on your door, your WiFi and how much you want to pay each month.
Here is how we work it out.
1. We start with your door and your power
A battery doorbell, a plug-in kit and a hardwired model suit different homes. Renters, apartment dwellers and owners with old bell wiring each have different limits.
We check the power type, the mounting method and what has to be in place first, such as bell wiring, a transformer or an indoor chime. When your home limits the choice, we say so up front.
2. We compare specs and features
We look at video resolution, field of view, night vision, motion alerts, two-way talk, chime options and WiFi bands. For battery doorbells we also note the battery type and how the maker says it charges.
We name the maker for every claim, such as "Ring says" or "Blink says". We also note the warranty terms the maker lists.
3. We look at buyer feedback
We read what buyers report after using a doorbell. We look for patterns, like slow alerts, WiFi drops, short battery life, hard installs or live view that lags.
One bad review doesn't sink a product. A pattern does.
4. We check the monthly plan
Many doorbells save video clips only with a paid plan. We note what the maker says works without one and what a plan adds.
Plans change, so we point you to the maker's page for current terms. We don't list prices on our pages.
5. We score each product
Our score weighs specs, features and buyer feedback against what you're shopping for. A doorbell that's great for one home may score lower in a guide written for another.
Scores spread out on purpose. A 10 is rare.
6. We keep pages up to date
Products change and some leave the shelves. Makers also sell near-identical models and bundles, so we check each model name and what's in the box before we link it.
We skip listings with almost no sales or reviews, and any model with a known recall. When we update a guide, the "Updated on" date at the top changes with it.
What our picks are not
Our picks are research, not lab tests. We don't claim to have installed or used every doorbell we cover.
We don't promise that any doorbell will work with your wiring, WiFi or phone. We make no promises about home security or crime prevention, and we label a maker's claims as the maker's claims.
Recording and privacy rules differ by state and by neighbor. We don't give legal advice, so check your local rules and each maker's privacy settings.
